What is Trauma-Informed Yoga?
TIY is an experiential practice, rooted in exploring movement through a safe, introspective approach.
Gentle movements will offer ample opportunity for the practitioner to choose their own pace, create comfortable rhythms, and initiate the ability to re-establish trust in their bodies. In this session, Yoga asana, Pranayama and Somatic release will be practised in combination as a means to experience safety and peace in movement and moments of stillness.
WHAT TO EXPECT
An hour-long session in which intentional body scans, pauses and slow movement will be presented to the practitioner. The sequence will offer variations in movement. The choice to stop at any point during the practice, to keep the camera on/off, to take more time in a certain posture or movement, lies with the practitioner.
This practice is different from Traditional Yoga classes in the following ways:
- Emphasis on safe cueing, for safe practice.
- Simple Postures.
- Slower Pace.
- Trauma-sensitive languaging-e.g: Invitational, Investigative, Reinforcing choice, Inclusive etc.
- Exploratory.
- Less about the form of the posture and more about the feeling of it.
- No levels like beginner, intermediate and advanced
ACCESSIBILITY
This session can be practised on a chair. In a TIY class, verbal and/or visual assists will only be offered if the practitioner chooses to receive it,the emphasis will remain on allowing the practitioner to curate/experience their own practice. Space around to stretch is preferred.
This is not a practice meant solely for Trauma survivors, it is an inclusive space for everyone.
INTENSITY
Low
PROPS, MATS etc
A yoga mat isn’t necessary for this practice, any soft/carpeted surface will do. No other props will be necessary for this practice.
