The “We will Not be Silent” Initiative aims to raise awareness about the trauma of childhood sexual abuse and the value of counselling in Black African and Caribbean communities in Leicester, Leicestershire and Rutland using a community-based approach.
In 2020/2021, 10 female Black African and Caribbean and Mixed White/Black heritage female survivors refer themselves to Quetzal. In 2021/2022, the number of referrals from female survivors from that particular background was 22. It represents 5% of the total number of referrals received in 2021/2022 (n=439).
With the support of Quetzal volunteer community connectors and by applying the learning from the Breaking the Silence Initiative, Quetzal will measure whether their engagement with Black African and Caribbean communities leads to more female survivors seeking support and starting their journey towards recovery and healing.
