Join South Asian Health Action for a community awareness-raising session about the impacts of childhood sexual abuse on adult survivors on Wednesday 30th June 6 – 8.30 pm. The session is delivered by Quetzal Leicester and supports the Breaking the Silence Initiative.
The community awareness-raising session is aimed at communities who want to understand the issues attached to childhood sexual abuse and discuss what they can do to support survivors.
About the Session
The session will
- first frame childhood sexual abuse as the greatest betrayal of trust
- identify who are the perpetrators,
- define what is sexual abuse and childhood sexual abuse,
- explain how perpetrators make lie into true,
- cover what is our response to trauma,
- describe the disorders born from trauma,
- and the maladaptive behaviours developed by survivors,
The session includes presentation and group discussions about what are the challenges for South Asian survivors to access counselling and what can communities do to support female survivors further and prevent childhood sexual abuse.
The session will end with each member which action they will take to support further survivors of childhood sexual abuse.
Who will present
Dhara Suryakumar, Community Connector – Dhara has been volunteering for Quetzal for now a year. She supports with social media communication and delivers presentation to various groups in Leicester. She studies a Master in International Marketing at De Montfort University.
Dr Marie Lefebvre, Project facilitator and Development Officer – Marie manages the delivery of the Breaking the Silence Initiative, a project that aims to measure the effectiveness of a community-based approach to raise awareness about the trauma of childhood sexual abuse in South Asian Communities based in Leicester.
