Do you have a love for writing, or are you simply curious to try something different? Either way, you’re in the right place!

Our weekly creative writing group is a safe and inclusive community where you can express your thoughts, emotions, and stories in unique and captivating ways. Whether you’re an experienced writer or just starting, our writing group is the perfect place to harness the power of words and give words to your emotions.

From “Step into nostalgia” to “What colour are you feeling today”, we start each session with fun and unique writing prompts designed to help you explore your emotions through words.

August Quetzal Creative Writers Club sessions

Join us for a series of creative writing sessions being organised in support of the Get Mouthy x Queer Coffee Link Up happening on 30th August.

1. 14th August – 11:00am -1:00pm (in-person at Quetzal)

Theme: Get Mouthy | No registration required

  • 5-Minute Free Flow Writing:
    Start with a 5-minute exercise reflecting on what “Get Mouthy” means, brainstorming associated words, and imagining which color represents the theme and why.
  • Sharing and Discussion:
    Participants will share their reflections in a supportive, non-judgmental space, with an emphasis on mindfulness and respect for one another’s boundaries.
  • 30-Minute Writing Session:
    An image based on “mouthy” will be provided as a prompt. Participants will have 30 minutes to write creatively, using the image as inspiration.
  • Sharing and Next Steps:
    Conclude with a sharing session, followed by details about the Get Mouthy x Queer Coffee Link Up on 30th August and information on the next online event.

2. 23rd August – 6:30pm – 8:00pm (online)

Theme: Queer Coffee; coffee, hot Drinks | Register via Zoom

  • 5-Minute Brainstorming Session:
    We’ll begin with a quick brainstorming session focused on the theme of coffee and hot drinks. Consider what these beverages mean to you and how they evoke feelings of comfort, community, or creativity. This exercise will help inspire and guide your writing.
  • 30-Minute Writing Session:
    Next, participants will have 30 minutes to write on the theme, interpreting it in any way they choose. This could be a nostalgic memory, a fictional story, a poem, or even a unique recipe. Use this time to explore the theme from your own perspective.
  • Sharing and Reflection:
    After the writing session, we’ll open the floor for sharing. This supportive space welcomes all voices. We’ll also discuss how the theme of coffee and hot drinks might relate to the concept of Queer Coffee and its connection to the upcoming poetry event.

3. 30th August – 6:00pm – 9:30pm (in-person at The Big Difference)

Theme: Get Mouthy and Queer Coffee Link Up | Registration required – ticketed event

A poetry event being organised by Get Mouthy Leicester and Queer Coffee to raise funds for Quetzal and Leicester LGBT Centre.

Writing Workshop with Nancy Dawkins
Kick off the evening with an inspiring poetry workshop led by Nancy Dawkins. Ideal for poets of all levels, this session will spark creativity and offer new insights into the craft.

7:30 PM – 9:30 PM
Performances: Amy Walpole | Open Mic
Enjoy a headline performance by the talented Amy Walpole, followed by an open mic session where you can share your own work and connect with other poets.

9:30 PM
Social | DJ Set
End the night on a high note with a lively DJ set. Dance, relax, and socialize as we celebrate poetry and community together.
